Mason A. Smith, MD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Mason A. Smith, MD, is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of 1stHealthSystems. Dr. Smith is a recognized expert in the areas of emergency department management, outpatient prospective payment, and software development. In 2008, Dr. Smith was recognized by his peers in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) as a “Hero of Emergency Medicine” for his outstanding contributions to Emergency Medicine.

Prior to founding 1stHealthSystems, Dr. Smith founded LYNX Medical Systems (currently part of Optum Health) and was LYNX’s Chief Executive Officer for more than 20 years. Dr. Smith was also the Director of Emergency Services for Swedish Medical Center from 1980–1987. He chaired the American College of Emergency Physician’s (ACEP) Reimbursement Committee from 1998–2001 and continues as a member today. He has been a participating member of ACEP’s Coding and Nomenclature Advisory Committee. Dr. Smith has been a frequent lecturer at the national level on topics including APCs, compliance, physician documentation guidelines, physician practice management, managed care and other topics, and has served as teaching faculty for ACEP’s coding and reimbursement courses. He co-authored Procedure Coding for Emergency Medicine: An Educational Manual, and was a contributing author for Optimizing Revenues Through Effective Reimbursement Strategies, as well as several other ACEP publications.

Dr. Smith received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Oregon and completed his residency training in internal medicine at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He attained Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Nancy Smith, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer

Nancy Smith is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for 1stHealth Systems. In this capacity, she has overall responsibility for financial and operational decisions.

Ms. Smith is the former CFO and COO for LYNX Medical Systems where she worked from 1987 – 2005.  During her tenure at LYNX, she was responsible for creating the management infrastructure for the evolving company as well as strategic development and integration of new product lines.  As such, she was instrumental in transitioning company operations to new technology platforms and worked with the executive management team to position the company for acquisition by a private equity firm in 2005.

In her role as Chief Operating Officer she had a key role in all major company projects from inception to completion:  development of the proprietary Coding software, Project Lead and liaison for the development of a proprietary Medicaid claims processing system for King County Medical Blue Shield, and development of the proprietary E/MAP and E/Code products, as well as developing and overseeing the consulting services division.  Ms. Smith has over 25 years of experience in emergency medicine and has extensive experience in facility revenue cycle management, physician reimbursement and operations consulting.   In addition she formed LYNX Physicians’ Billing Company (LPBI) in 1992 which successfully operated under her guidance until being sold in 2004.  Prior to LYNX, Ms. Smith was the emergency department Business Manager for West Seattle Hospital.

Jack Berkery, Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Jack Berkery is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for 1stHealthSystems. Jack has been a principal in 1stHealthSystems since 2008 and joined the company full-time in December 2011. Since joining the company, he has increased sales, developed and launched integrated data-driven marketing campaigns, and led the commercial launch of 1stHealth’s IV Services product line.

Jack joined the company from Wolters Kluwer Health, where he was the Vice President of Sales for the Western United States, Director of National Accounts, and Director of Business Development for the Electronic Health Record (EHR) market segment for the ProVation and Medi-Span brands. His primary responsibility at Wolters Kluwer Health was establishing the ProVation Order Sets product line as a market leader. During his 3 years at Wolters Kluwer Health, the ProVation Order Sets product line grew by more than 1000%, displaced competitors at key client sites, and outranked the competition by an overwhelming majority in KLAS criteria. Earlier in his career Jack was on the senior management team of Zynx Health, a Hearst company, for 6 years where he served as Director of Client Services and had overall responsibility for the implementation and service of Zynx Health products at more than 1,400 hospitals.

As part of the Hearst Management Institute’s Foundations of Leadership program, Jack received his formal leadership education from professors at Stanford, Wharton, and Kellogg and is currently completing his MBA at the W.P. Carey School of Business of Arizona State University. Jack is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He earned his BA in economics from UCLA.

Serge Baranovsky, Chief Technology Officer

Serge Baranovsky is the Chief Technology Officer for 1stHealthSystems.  In this capacity he has overall responsibility for Product Design, Development and Technology functions.

Serge joined 1stHealthSystems in 2008. He is a recognized expert in the field of software development and technology with more than 20 years of experience.  Prior to joining 1stHealth Systems, he worked at LYNX Medical Systems where he was the Director of Development from 1999 – 2007 and was responsible for the design and implementation of all medical software products as well as strategic and technology platform decisions.

Prior to beginning his career in the United States, and becoming a US citizen, Serge was the Lead Developer for Region Bank in Ukraine from 1994 -1998.  In this capacity he was responsible for the development team that created the banking software for a secure enterprise system which was highly transaction and audit based and interfaced using various banking standards.  The software was in compliance with strict transaction and security regulations of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Serge is the founder of one of the largest online development communities, VB City, which joins over 200,000 .NET developers worldwide. Serge earned a Masters Degree in Rocket Science and a Bachelors Degree in Radio Electronics from National Aerospace University of Ukraine. Serge is recognized by Microsoft as a Most Valuable Professional and is a Microsoft Certified Partner.
